7-Day Morocco Itinerary: Marrakech to Fes via the Sahara
Seven days linking Marrakech and Fes with a night in the Sahara desert between them — Morocco's classic first-time route, unhurried.
Day-by-Day Plan

Day 1: Marrakech — Arrival & Medina Orientation
Arrive into Marrakech Menara Airport and transfer to your riad in the medina. A gentle orientation walk through the nearest souk lanes gets you oriented before the fuller day tomorrow. In the evening we head to Jemaa el-Fna as the food stalls light up and the square fills with musicians, henna artists, and storytellers. Dinner is at one of the square's grill stalls.

Day 2: Marrakech — Souks, Bahia Palace & Jardin Majorelle
A full day in Marrakech: Bahia Palace early, before the crowds, then into the Medersa Ben Youssef and the dyers' and tanners' souks. Afternoon is Jardin Majorelle — Yves Saint Laurent's cobalt-blue garden — and the adjoining Berber Museum. We close with a second, quieter pass through Jemaa el-Fna at dusk.

Day 3: Road to the Sahara — Aït Benhaddou & Dadès Gorge
We leave Marrakech early to reach Aït Benhaddou before the tour buses arrive — the ksar looks completely different without 200 people on the ramparts. From there we cross the Draa Valley into the Dadès Gorge, where the road switchbacks between red rock walls. Overnight in a kasbah guesthouse overlooking the gorge.

Day 4: Merzouga — Sahara Sunrise, Camel Trek & Bivouac Night
We reach Merzouga by early afternoon and visit a Gnawa village en route — a chance to hear the region's distinct spiritual music tradition before the desert stretch begins. Sunset camel trek into Erg Chebbi, arriving at a bivouac camp for a tagine dinner around the fire and Berber music under a genuinely dark sky.

Day 5: Merzouga to Fes via the Ziz Valley & Ifrane
Sunrise over the dunes before breakfast, then the long drive north through the Ziz Valley's palmeries and up into the Middle Atlas. We stop in Ifrane — sometimes called Morocco's Switzerland for its Alpine-style architecture and cedar forests — before descending into Fes by early evening. Check-in at your riad, dinner nearby.

Day 6: Fes — Tanneries, Al-Qarawiyyin & the Medina
A full day inside Fes el-Bali, the world's largest car-free urban medina. We view the Chouara Tannery from a leather shop terrace in the morning light and smell, then pass the Al-Qarawiyyin — founded in 859 and recognised as the world's oldest continuously operating university — before losing ourselves deliberately in the blue-tiled medina lanes with a guide who actually knows the way out.

Day 7: Fes — Final Morning & Departure
A slower final morning — time for last souk purchases or simply a coffee on a riad terrace overlooking the medina rooftops. Private transfer to Fes Saïss Airport or onward connection, timed to your flight.
