5-Day Morocco Itinerary: Marrakech & the Sahara
Five days covering Marrakech's medina and the Sahara desert near Merzouga — Morocco's two essential experiences, without rushing either.
Day-by-Day Plan

Day 1: Marrakech — Arrival & Medina Orientation
Arrive into Marrakech Menara Airport and transfer to your riad in the medina. After checking in, we take a slow orientation walk through the nearest souk lanes — no rush, just enough to get your bearings before the busier day tomorrow. In the evening we head to Jemaa el-Fna as the food stalls light up and the square fills with musicians and storytellers. Dinner is at one of the square's grill stalls, guided to the stands locals actually eat at.

Day 2: Marrakech — Souks, Bahia Palace & the Medina in Full
A full day in Marrakech, starting early at Bahia Palace before the tour groups arrive, then into the Medersa Ben Youssef and the dyers' and tanners' souks. We break for mint tea at a rooftop away from the main square, then continue through the spice and lantern quarters. Afternoon is free for the Jardin Majorelle or simply resting before a second, quieter evening at Jemaa el-Fna.

Day 3: Road to the Sahara — Aït Benhaddou & Dadès Valley
We leave Marrakech early to reach Aït Benhaddou before the tour buses do — the ksar looks completely different in the morning light without 200 people on the ramparts. From there we cross the Draa Valley and climb into the Dadès Gorge, where the road switchbacks between red rock walls. Overnight in a kasbah guesthouse at the gorge, with dinner looking out over the valley.

Day 4: Merzouga — Sahara Sunrise, Dunes & Bivouac Night
We continue east through the Ziz Valley palmeries and reach Merzouga by early afternoon, in time to settle in before the sunset camel trek into Erg Chebbi. Camels cross the dunes as the light turns gold, arriving at a bivouac camp for a traditional tagine dinner around the fire and Berber music under a genuinely dark sky. Most guests are asleep by 10pm — the desert silence takes some adjusting to.

Day 5: Sunrise Over the Dunes & Return to Marrakech
An early wake-up (around 5:30am) to climb the nearest dune ridge for sunrise — worth the lost sleep. After breakfast at camp, we begin the long drive back to Marrakech via the Tizi n'Tichka pass through the High Atlas, arriving in the late afternoon in time for an evening flight or onward connection.

It's enough to properly cover Marrakech and the Sahara desert — the two experiences most first-time visitors prioritise. You won't reach Fes or the coast in this window. If those are on your list, the 7-day itinerary covers them without feeling rushed.

March–May and September–November for the most comfortable temperatures in both Marrakech and the desert. Summer is workable but hot — the Sahara regularly exceeds 45°C in July and August.

Hand-picked riads in the Marrakech medina for nights 1–2, a kasbah guesthouse at the Dadès Gorge for night 3, and a traditional Berber bivouac camp in the dunes for night 4 — shared canvas tents with proper beds, not sleeping bags on sand.
