About this journey
This is our standard Marrakech-Atlas-Sahara route, restructured specifically around what actually works for families with children — shorter driving days, more overnight stops rather than long single pushes, and activities kids genuinely enjoy rather than adult sightseeing they have to sit through. The route covers the same ground as our other Sahara tours but at a gentler pace: camel rides framed as an adventure rather than a photo op, a night in the desert that's exciting rather than intimidating, and stops built around what interests children — a fossil workshop, animals, open spaces to run around in. This suits families with children roughly 5 and up who want a real Morocco experience rather than a watered-down one, but need the pacing adjusted so nobody's melting down by day 4. It runs as a small-group departure with other families, or fully privately if you'd rather have your own vehicle and schedule. Guides on this route are specifically experienced with families — patient with questions, good at explaining things at a child's level, and realistic about bathroom stops and energy levels.

Day by day
An easy first afternoon — a short, unhurried walk through part of the medina with plenty of stops, timed to end before anyone gets overtired. Overnight in a family-friendly riad in Marrakech.

The Tichka Pass drive is broken into more stops than our standard tours, with plenty of chances to stretch. Ait Benhaddou — the kasbah used in Gladiator and Game of Thrones — is a genuine hit with kids who recognise it from films. Overnight in Ouarzazate.

A shorter driving day than our standard route, with a stop at a rose-water cooperative and an easy walk into the edge of the Dadès Gorge. Overnight in the valley rather than pushing straight through to the desert.

A shorter final stretch to Merzouga, arriving with plenty of daylight left. The camel trek to the bivouac camp offers a shorter route for younger children, and the desert camp is framed as the big adventure of the trip — which it usually is.

Sunrise over the dunes, then a stop at a fossil workshop in Erfoud — genuinely popular with children, who get to see 350-million-year-old marine fossils being cut from the rock, sometimes with a small souvenir fossil to take home. Overnight back in Ouarzazate, splitting the return drive across two easier days.
