Four days is the minimum we'd recommend for a genuine Sahara loop from Marrakech — any shorter and the desert night becomes a rushed add-on rather than the point of the trip. This version compresses our 5-day tour's route without cutting the parts that matter: the Tichka Pass crossing, Ait Benhaddou, and a full night in a bivouac camp at Erg Chebbi. The trade-off for the shorter timeframe is pace — two of the four days involve 6+ hours of driving, split by stops rather than done in one push. What you don't lose is the desert night itself: the camel trek, the bivouac, the sunrise. That part isn't shortened. This suits travellers with a hard deadline — a work trip with a long weekend attached, a stopover before flying home — who still want the real Sahara experience rather than a day-trip imitation from Marrakech (which typically means 10+ hours in a vehicle for a few hours at the dunes and no overnight). If you have even one extra day, our 5-day version adds Skoura and the Telouet Kasbah on the return leg and removes some of the back-to-back driving — worth considering if your schedule has any flexibility at all.

Day by day
An early start over the Tichka Pass, the highest year-round road in the Atlas, with a coffee stop at a viewpoint over the valley. Ait Benhaddou, the UNESCO kasbah seen in Gladiator and Game of Thrones, is walked in the early afternoon before the bigger tour groups arrive from Marrakech. Overnight in Ouarzazate.

A shorter stop in the Dadès Valley than our longer tours allow, but still time for a proper look at the rose-water cooperative and the gorge entrance, before continuing to Merzouga. You arrive as the dunes start turning gold, with the camel trek to the bivouac set for around 90 minutes before sunset.

The one non-negotiable early start of the trip — sunrise from the dunes, worth losing the sleep over. Camels return you to the vehicle by mid-morning for the long drive back to Marrakech, retracing the route with fewer stops than day one. It's a full day of travel, but you're back in a proper bed in Marrakech by evening.

Layers — desert nights drop to single digits Celsius even when the day was warm, especially November to February. A headtorch, sunscreen, and a scarf for dust are also worth bringing.
