Common questions
Where in Morocco is the 2027 eclipse total?
Across the far north, in a band about 236 km wide that runs from the Atlantic coast near Larache and Asilah, through Tangier, Tetouan and Chefchaouen, to Al Hoceima, Nador and Saïdia on the Mediterranean. Oujda sits right on the southern edge. Rabat, Fes, Meknes, Casablanca and Marrakech are outside the band and see a partial eclipse.
How were these times calculated?
From the Besselian elements and path table published by NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center (Fred Espenak), using the standard method for local circumstances. Our totality durations match timeanddate.com for Tangier and Chefchaouen. They do not include the Moon’s limb profile, so real contact times can differ by a few seconds, more near the edges of the path.
Why are the Spanish times an hour later than Morocco’s?
The eclipse reaches both sides of the Strait within a minute, but Spain and Gibraltar are on UTC+2 in summer while Morocco is on UTC+1. Totality in Tarifa at 10:45 Spanish time happens at the same moment as 09:45 in Morocco.
Is it worth travelling from Fes or Rabat into the path?
Yes. Even 98% coverage leaves the sky bright and the corona invisible. Only inside the path does the sky go dark enough to see the corona, planets and bright stars. From Fes, Chefchaouen is about three and a half hours by road; from Rabat, Larache and Asilah are about two hours north on the motorway.
