Ask on WhatsApp When is the total solar eclipse in Morocco?+
Monday 2 August 2027, in the morning. In northern Morocco the partial phase starts at about 08:40 Morocco time (UTC+1), totality falls between about 09:44 and 09:53 depending on where you stand, and the eclipse is over by about 11:07. In Chefchaouen totality runs from 09:45 for 4 min 13 s.
Which parts of Morocco see the total eclipse?+
A band about 236 km wide across the far north: Tangier, Asilah, Larache, Tetouan, M’diq, Chefchaouen, Ouazzane, Al Hoceima, Nador and Saïdia, with Oujda right on the southern edge. Rabat, Meknes, Fes and Casablanca sit just outside the band and see a deep partial eclipse, with 97–99% of the Sun covered. Marrakech sees about 89%.
Is Marrakech or Fes in the path of totality?+
No. Fes sees about 98% of the Sun covered and Marrakech about 89%, but a partial eclipse is a different experience: the sky stays bright, the corona never appears, and you need eclipse glasses the whole time. To see totality you need to be inside the band, which from Fes means Chefchaouen, about three and a half hours’ drive north.
Why do you watch from Chefchaouen rather than Tangier?+
Chefchaouen sits inland behind the Rif mountains and has the lowest cloud amount of any Moroccan site on the track in meteorologist Jay Anderson’s eclipse climatology. Totality there is 4 min 13 s, against about 4 min 53 s on the coast near Tetouan, so we trade some seconds for better odds of a clear sky. With a private driver you can still move north on the morning if the forecast favours the coast.
What happens if it is cloudy on eclipse morning?+
No one can guarantee a clear sky. We watch the forecasts and the dust outlook in the days before, decide the viewing spot with you the evening before, and leave early enough to reach somewhere clearer, such as the east side of Tetouan or Tangier, before the partial phase begins. A private vehicle is what makes that change of plan possible.
Do I need eclipse glasses?+
Yes, for every minute except totality itself. Use glasses that meet the ISO 12312-2 standard and buy them before you travel from a reputable supplier, as they are hard to find in Morocco. Our safety guide explains when it is safe to take them off and how to photograph the eclipse on a phone.
Can I combine the eclipse with a trip to Spain?+
Yes. The fast ferry from Tarifa to Tangier takes about an hour, and southern Spain is also inside the path. Plan to cross a day or two before the eclipse: early August is the peak of Opération Marhaba, when hundreds of thousands of Moroccans living in Europe cross the Strait for the summer, and queues at the ports can be long.
How far ahead should I book an eclipse tour?+
As early as you can. Chefchaouen is a small town of mostly small riads, and August is already the busiest month for travel in northern Morocco. Private tours can be moved to new dates up to three times at no charge if you ask at least 40 days before departure.
Will it be too hot in August?+
The eclipse happens in the morning, when temperatures in the north are comfortable, and the air cools noticeably during totality. Tangier and the coast are usually warm rather than hot in August. Fes and Marrakech are hot in the afternoons, and the Sahara passes 40°C, so we don’t run desert nights in August and route eclipse trips through the north, the Middle Atlas and the coast instead.
